That depends on the stove you have in your mind’s eye. The old-fashioned, pot-belly stoves that appear in most Western movies didn’t do the atmosphere any favors. But today’s wood burning stoves, engineered with fuel economy in mind, are a different story.

How do you feel when you sit down at your desk every day?

Is your office chair uncomfortable, causing you irritating little aches? By 10am are you feeling sleepy, drab, slightly depressed and unmotivated? Are you busy thinking of yet another reason to escape your claustrophobic cage (even just for a few minutes)?

Composting is very similar to recycling but in the broader sense, recycling encompasses everything. Whether it is composting or recycling the objective is to provide a kinder environment for our future inhabitants. Environment conservation is a priority for all of us. We have now realized the urgency of keeping the environment free from harmful emissions and chemical interactions. Anything that disturbs the ecological balance and pollutes the environment is hazardous and should be avoided or at least minimized to a great extent. The production and usage of various commodities should comply with eco friendly standards. This has given rise to the term “environment friendly” that essentially refers to the processes, products and services that cause minimum harm to the environment.

For years there have been a variety of ways to freshen the air indoors. You can use a spray air freshener, open a door, light a candle, or in more recent years plug a device into the wall that freshens the air continually. Recently, I’ve also noticed a new type of air freshener called a diffuser.

A diffuser is a table-top device that consists of a bottle, aromatic oil, and some tubular reeds. The reeds are placed into the bottle filled with the oil, and the oil is slowly diffused into the air by the reeds through a wicking effect. This simple device provides ongoing scent into the air for a long time (weeks/months).  Read more...

Mention the word meditation, and the image that comes to mind is that of a person sitting in a lotus position on top of a mountain. The environment around him is very serene and quiet, surrounded by nature. Many believe that if the environmental conditions are not right, it would not be possible to meditate. However, most are not aware that meditation can be performed in almost any kind of environment.

Summertime is here and kids are out of school, so it is the perfect time for parents and kids to get serious about our environment and keeping it a safe and beautiful place to enjoy for many years to come.

According to a recent article in THE Journal by Chris Riedel entitled, “Green Schools: The Color of Money” school districts have finally discovered that going green can mean financial rewards.

It is not just about turning off lights, changing light bulbs or shutting off idle computers — it is about rethinking the way things are done at every level from companies, to schools, or even at home.  Read more...

I met David Suzuki in 1986 at a special awards dinner at the Windsor Press Club. I was there to receive the Dean’s Award for top of my class in St. Clair College’s three-year print journalism course. Suzuki was there to talk about the environment.

Before people even got interested in the environment and began raised concern about what man has done to destroy it, Suzuki was ringing the alarm bells. He is truly a Canadian pioneer in this area.
